U.S. Virgin Islands

The United States Virgin Islands is an unincorporated territory of the United States in the Caribbean Sea. The territory consists of three main islands — St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John — and approximately 50 smaller islets and cays. The population is approximately 87,146.

Government

The USVI is governed by an elected governor and a 15-member unicameral legislature. The territory has a non-voting delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives. The islands are divided into two judicial districts.

Districts

The territory is divided into two districts: the District of St. Thomas and St. John, and the District of St. Croix. Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas serves as the territorial capital.

Economy

Tourism is the primary economic driver, along with rum production, petroleum refining, and financial services. The Hovensa oil refinery on St. Croix was once one of the world's largest.
